Mother’s Day Race Recap

ha!  I ran my first race this morning, so this is my first race recap, so cool!

Today I ran the Mother’s Day women only 3.5 mile-r in Melrose.  When I woke up the meteorologists kept using words like “blustery cold” and “increasing winds” in the same sentences as “beautiful day”.  I was confused!  How could it be cold and windy but nice out??

I definitely had some pre-race jitters.  The jitters came mostly from just not knowing what to expect!

For breakfast I stuck with what I know: oatmeal.  I finally finished off my instant oatmeal packages by eating 2 packs of apple spice oatmeal.  I ate them around 7:15 with half a banana.

Then I walked to the store to grab a couple of waters.  When I stepped outside the wind was blowing FREEZING cold wind.  I was immediately scared- wind makes my eyes water when I run, and thought it may be too cold to run!  (Never mind the fact I was walking in the shade AND it was pretty early in the morning!)

Amy and I walked the half mile to the starting line from my apartment.  We walked in the sun to help us warm up, and it worked.  My mom even met me there to watch me run!  HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

When we were lining up to start, they had poles with mileage markers posted.  We walked to the back of the 9:00 pace but ended up somewhere closer to the beginning of the 8:00 pace because of all the people crowding our space.  For me, I was nervous, and all the runners packed tightly together really made me more anxious, so I threw on my ipod and just waited to start.

The playlist I ended up listening to was my old March Running Mix that I had doctored up before:

  1. Closer                                 Kings of Leon
  2. Human                              The Killers
  3. Meet me Halfway           Black Eyed Peas
  4. Forever                              Chris Brown
  5. Spotlight                           Jennifer Hudson
  6. Beautiful                           Akon
  7. Closer                                Ne-Yo
  8. Sex on Fire                       Kings of Leon
  9. Sober                                  Pink
  10. Put it in a Love Song     Alicia Keys
  11. Rude Boy                          Rihanna
  12. Break your Heart            Taio Cruz
  13. Hard                                  Rihanna
  14. Rock Star                          N.E.R.D
  15. Read my Mind                 The Killers
  16. All these Things that I’ve Done     The Killers
  17. Run                                   Snow Patrol

When the race started, it was pretty tough to get started because there were a lot of people trying to do what I was trying to do: RUN!  Amy and I jogged a little and weaved though the crowds, and then I was off!  I remember hearing my ipod but don’t really remember the songs!  In past solo runs I have used music to motivate me, but for this run it was just really background music.

The weather was pretty perfect to run and the wind died down as I ran (or at least I think it did, I actually don’t remember noticing anything during the run!).  The course was a little hilly and curved through side streets by a pond and lots of cute little houses.  The last half was actually part of my regular running route so I liked that this part of the route was familiar to me!  Swain's Pond

I reached the MILE 1 MARKER in 9:37 and was pumped!   I actually kept waiting for the second mile marker and there wasn’t one, which made me think the race was never going to end, haha.  When I reached MILE 3 my time was 27:something, which made me feel pretty good!

When I was reaching the finish line, Jack was there with my camera, but I guess I was too speedy for him to get a good shot ;)

I finished the race in 31:29 at a 9 minute pace (that was 181st out of 870 runners).  Not too shabby for my first race!  Amy did great too!

After the race we celebrated our big accomplishment with some delicious mimosas.  I made them with champagne, Cointreau, and OJ, with a couple of frozen raspberries to make them fancy!

I also made some Pancake Truffles to munch on for some post-race fuel!  I got the idea from Caitlin at her blog, Healthy Tipping Point.  I doubled the recipe to make 6 truffles!

Pancake Truffles (from Healthy Tipping Point)

  • 1/2 cup raw oatmeal
  • 1/3 cup whole wheat pancake mix
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/4 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 4.5 inches of banana (cut into three 1.5 inch pieces)
  • 1.4 cup whole pecans, crushed
  • Maple syrup to taste

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Combine first five ingredients in small bowl.
  • On a plate, spread out crushed pecan.
  • Grease cookie sheet.
  • Separate mix into three piles.
  • Take one segment of banana and coat in the pancake mix.  It will be kind of sticky and wet, but that’s fine.
  • Form ball around the banana segment, and then roll in the crushed pecans.
  • Place on greased cookie sheet.
  • Repeat with other banana segments.
  • Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.
  • Remove, plate, and drizzle in maple syrup.
  • Enjoy!

They were delicious and we ate them while we talked about how fast the race was over!  I think I was on a runner’s high for sure!  I can’t wait to run my next race, I think I caught the runner’s “bug”!

Then I took a pretty long nap!  I slept from 11:30 ish until 4!  Wow, I must’ve needed it!

Now I am going to get some dinner and pack up for morning gym tomorrow.  I can’t believe how fast the weekend goes by!

and how was your Mother’s Day??!
